“Coffee?” I pointedly hold a Styrofoam cup before my partner Toni.
She takes the cup from my hands gratefully saying, “Thank you, Sam. And it’s from the little lady’s café & diner too.”
I chuckle circling back around to my desk. “Carter still in holding?”
“Yep.” Toni gulps down the coffee as if there was no tomorrow. I knew my wife’s coffee to be good but I don’t remember it being that good.
“Where’s Sanz and Dawson?” I ask, clearing my desk.
“Not in yet. And it’s ten minutes before the meeting you scheduled,” Toni replies. “What do you want to do?”
I look observantly around the squad room noticing other detectives and patrol officers assigned to the SCS gathering around. “Get everyone ready, Toni; I’ll be with Carter in interrogation room one for awhile.”
“I believe they’re called interview rooms, old friend.”
Heading off to the holding cells I speak back over my shoulder. “Not today, ma’am.”
After retrieving Carter from his cell I shuffle him off into one of our “interrogation” rooms where I have him sit in a chair on one side of the table while I sit across from him slapping down an open file before him displaying the gory pictures of Carmichael’s and the Rosenfelts’ autopsies.
As I had expected the police officer turned serial killer did not even blink.
“What do these have anything to do with me, Lafayette?” he asks with an undertone of arrogance in his voice. “From what I hear the case has been—how do you put it—solved? At worst I’ll just end up in my old cell.”
“I don’t particularly care about what you heard, Mister Carter. I do, however, care about what you know and what you have done,” I reply. “Now, answer my questions to my satisfaction or I will put your head through this table.”
Carter stares at me as if I’m a child with a dozen pestering questions. He then chuckles and rolls his eyes. “I’m not obligated to answer you, young blood, especially without my lawyer present. Besides, you’ve got nothing on me for the Carmichael thing except for being at the wrong place at the right time. So call the state and have me sent back home.”
I slip off my sunglasses and lean back in my chair with both of my hands on the table. “I know Xavier put you up to all of this. I’m surprised that he was actually bold enough to contact you himself. But believe you me, my friend, you need to tell me how this is all connected or perhaps there may be someone waiting for you in your cell when you get back there.” My tone is evidently effective because the smirk on Carter’s face fades away.
“You have no idea what you’re in for, no idea at all,” Carter says lowly. “You can sit here and threaten me all you want. You’ll get your information, but how is it going to help you stay safe? You know as well as I do that
