The day wore on, and though the rest of the travelers had gotten some sleep during the day, Storm had not. There was too much to do, reuniting with the members of his clan. Now that the clan knew Storm was once again accepted by his father, they warmed up to him as well. Women of the clan brought him more food than he could eat, and enough ale and whisky to relax him to the point of wanting to finally sleep.
The children of the clan swarmed around him everywhere he went. The older ones always asking him to tell another of his tales from the places he'd traveled and the people he'd met.
It was good to be back home again. Storm smiled inwardly as well as outwardly, watching the clan go about accepting their travelers and seeing to their needs.
The sun was setting over the Firth, and the clansmembers were preparing to retire for the evening. Most stayed in small stone cottages, sleeping on woven pallets upon the cold ground. The cottages had thatched roofs with a small smoke hole in the middle. There were two considerably larger cottages in the camp. One belonged to the chieftain and his family, and the other was set up as a hospice for the sick, weak and old.
Storm watched the busy clansmembers going about their daily duties and longed to give them the warmth of a castle, trestle tables to eat upon, and a thicker, warmer sleeping pallet beneath their poor, weary bodies.
Renard, at the insistence of Lara, was to spend the night in the family cottage. However, Storm’s father refused to let Wren stay with them, but offered her lodging in the hospice along with Zara, Nixie and Morganna. Not wanting the lustful Frenchman sleeping anywhere near the clanswomen, the chieftain announced that Sir Jean de Tripette was to spend the night under the stars. And since he hadn't offered his own lodgings to Storm, it was obvious some harsh feelings still existed between them.
