CHAPTER TEN

Kye stopped the tractor and headed through the dust and heat to the truck where it barely hugged a little shade at the edge of a near-by tree line. The afternoon had just passed midway. The air, stifling hot at well over a hundred degrees, was still. As he got close to the truck and the trees, he could hear the incessant buzzing of locust lodged in the branches and nothing else.

Opening the can of water, he tipped it and wet his bandana then let it sit back on its bottom and splashed the cloth across his face and bathed his neck, then got into a small cooler and removed the next to last bottle of water. It was still cold, and he drained it in three big gulps, then swiped his face and neck with the bandana a couple more times as he looked at what progress he had made.

It was enough for the day he decided and tugged his cell out of his pocket to check the time.

Three-ten.

He had gotten several texts and scrolled through them and pulled one up from Gary Winn, the pastor of the Mennonite church and read--then carefully re-read--every word. He was letting Kye know that a meeting of the church board had been called for that evening. As an officer—him being the Community Services Director—Kye knew he would be expected to attend. The meeting was for seven, but Gary asked that he be there early if at all possible. He shook his head slowly while getting the uneasy feeling that somehow this wasn’t going to be good.

He also had a text from Seth asking him what was taking so long about getting to their hay. Kye smiled, knowing Seth didn’t care about the hay one-way-or-the other, but was probably bored and wanted Kye to come play. At least come where he could bring him out cold drinks, fix him lunch, and get friend kisses and try to talk him out of jeans. He pecked him out a quick answer letting him know it would be in the next couple of days.

He texted him back at once, answering with a smiley face emoji with a lewd looking tongue hanging out.

Kye smiled and shook his head.

Bella and Zack met him at the door as they always did, both touching and kissing him, Zack wanting to be picked up and spun around. Everyone got what they wanted, then Bella handed him his iced tea she had waiting.

“Bring it in here,” she told him and led him to the living room.

As soon as Kye sat, she pulled his boots off.

He had stopped resisting her—she was going to do it and he might as well get used to it.

“You’re early, baby. I’m glad, but I haven’t even started supper.”

“That’s ok. I’m going to get cooled off then I’ll go through the shower. I don’t know how you can even stand to get close to me when I’m so hot and sweaty,” he told her while smelling the shoulder of his shirt.
