I am obviously Latina. I have an accent, and I am Mexican. But I don’t identify with other Latinos; I am a mix of Israeli, Latin American, and Mexican. Also, I am obviously not part of or like the typical Mexican immigrant. But I still face discrimination for being Latina. A friend said to me recently, “I am going to give you some advice, don’t talk too much in Spanish because people will not regard you well.” But there is an advantage to speaking Spanish, especially when dealing with people from the service industry and it’s the second language of the United States.
