The sun was low in the sky as Carissa awoke. She lay still for a moment, feeling Gabriel’s shoulder beneath her cheek. She thought of the kiss they had shared and marveled at it. He had been so gentle and yet she had found it impossible to resist his embrace. It had taken all of her will to end the kiss because she had wanted it to last forever. So many strange things had happened to her that she was surprised that anything could yet amaze her.

Love. It had to be. Nothing else could describe what she was feeling. She longed to say it aloud, to taste the word on her tongue. Love, the magic that poets talked of, had finally found her. She remembered what the gypsy woman had told her, that she would wander long in darkness before finding love.

The darkness had been long and terrible indeed. And yet, just as she had said, Carissa had fallen in love.

How had it happened? How had she fallen in love with a vampire? Looking back she realized it had been no one event, but a series of steps that had led inexorably and inevitably here. A thousand words, a hundred gestures, a dozen acts of thoughtfulness and kindness.

So this was what it felt like. It was a quiet passion within, not the raging storm she had been led to expect by poets and gossips. Maybe they had never truly experienced it and just made up the other to have something to say so that they might seem wise and worldly.

Maybe that had not always been true, but surely if the sinner could turn from his ways the base man could elevate himself. So what if he outwardly seemed a monster; was it not the quality of his mind and soul that made a man?

If that were true, then Pierre was certainly no man, but rather a monster who wrapped himself in a shroud of self-righteousness.

He was awake. She didn’t know how she knew, but she did.

“Are you awake?” he asked softly in her ear.

“You know that I am or you would not have asked,” she replied, struggling with her own newly discovered emotions.

“Are you well? Your heart is racing.”

She looked up at him. She wasn’t ready to answer that. Instead she asked a question she had spent a lot of time thinking about. “Is it difficult to restrain yourself from…from…”

“From biting you?” he asked.

“Yes.” She had wondered that for a long time. Now she wondered if it was half as hard for him to keep himself from biting her as it was for her to keep from kissing him again right then.

“Yes, it is,” he said. “Very hard.”

Her heart skipped a beat.

“Do not worry, I will not.”

And she thought of
