Laser treatment for kidney stones surgery may also go by the name of endoscopic/ureteroscopic kidney stone removal, where the endoscope, or camera, is placed through the urethra into the ureter and up into the kidney. The image is transferred to a monitor where the physician can look for the lodged stone.

Once found, the physician will then insert a laser and thread it until it reaches the stone to be blasted. Once blasted, the endoscope is removed, and a stent is placed in the ureter so that the stone fragments will pass into the bladder more easily.

The endoscope measures 5mm in diameter and may cause swelling when inserted into a ureter that measures from 2mm to 3 mm. The stent prevents stone particles and fragments from becoming stuck in the swollen ureter.

X-rays and anesthesia are involved.
