2. What I will not do is a list of personal boundaries or decisions that I control.
3. What I hope happens contains some wishes or prayers that I can’t control directly.
Each of us has similar categories. What we can control falls under Category 1 or 2. For example, I can change my mind and decide to lick a sidewalk, but I’m in control of that decision. I can cancel a work meeting, but I decide whether to do so.
There’s no need to hope, wish, pray, or ask friends and family for luck in regard to those things we can control (except for those times when I pray I will get it all done!). What if I said, “Wish me luck that I can put my clothes on so I don’t leave the house naked!” Barring the existence of any medical conditions, sheer will helps a person accomplish this sort of task. Yet people who are beginning a ketogenic diet frequently say, “Wish me luck!” or “I hope I can do this!”
You do not need hopes and wishes to stay on plan. Staying on plan has to be non-negotiable. Eating keto is something that you will do today, tomorrow, the next day, and the day after that. If you’re only wishing and hoping that you can do it, then you need to stop right there. Eating keto has to be in Category 1. It has to be something you will do. Wishing will not make it happen.
Going off plan goes in Category 2. It is not something you will do, even in an emergency. Yes, I’ve been called to the hospital for a loved one at 3 a.m. Yes, I’ve been in meetings or at social gatherings where there was no keto-friendly food. In those situations, I simply didn’t eat; I chose to wait until I had better food options. The longer you stay on plan, the easier it becomes to navigate challenging circumstances. The keys to success are a little creative problem solving and a lot of determination. (See here to here for tips for staying on plan in challenging situations.)
In spite of my list, my days do not always go as planned. There are times when I’ve missed a meal, but because of keto, I just powered through and burned the fat from my butt (at least I hope it came from there!).
Look at your categories. What will you do? What will you not do? Take wishing and hoping off the table.
