Nate’s Birthday Present
“Is that guy going to be in trouble?” Ally asked. “Because he should be.”
“Could be.” She could hear the smile in Nate’s voice all the way from Johannesburg. “He got red-carded for it, and they lost the game, neither of which will look good to his coach, or his skipper either. Probably be fined as well. But he’s not a bad bloke, really. Just one of those things that happens sometimes in the heat of battle. I decided not to pass your text along to him. Didn’t want to scare him, add to his woes.”
She had to laugh at that despite her outrage. She’d been furious to see Nate upended in the dangerous tip-tackle, and had jumped off the couch shouting in the wee hours of the morning. Which had resulted in a not-very-pleasant visit from her downstairs neighbor, but oh well. And a text to Nate too.
Tell him to watch out for me. Going to turn HIM upside down next time he’s here.
“It really seemed that he went after you, though.” She pressed a bit more. “And that isn’t the first time I’ve seen it happen. It seems to me like you’re a special target.”
“Sometimes,” he admitted. “When you’re the skipper, or when they see you as a threat. You could see it as flattery.”
“Or you could see it as thuggery. Or that they’re just nasty,” she said, which made him laugh.
“Sorry I play such a nasty sport,” he said soothingly. “Take up badminton instead, d’you reckon?”
“Does New Zealand have badminton?”
“Course. The Black Cocks.”
“They do not!” She was laughing now. “That isn’t true.”
“Nah. Not anymore. They made them change the name. Pity, really. I thought it was brilliant.”
“Anyway,” he went on. “I wanted to ask you, d’you want to go somewhere with me? I’ve got a bye coming up, two weeks from now.”
“I remember.” This was the moment she’d been waiting for. Because she could hear the weariness in Nate’s voice already, and he’d have played eight games in a row by that point, the beginning of the season a distant memory. And the final game was likely to be as brutal as the one he’d just endured. The previous night’s match had been intense from beginning to end, both teams sinking to the ground at the referee’s final whistle in complete exhaustion. The much-needed win would help, but it wouldn’t make up for the bruising and battering he’d taken.
And the next game, the final one before the bye, would be played in South Africa as well, enemy territory. Another harsh physical contest, she was sure, then the long flight back. And after all that, once the brief break was over, three days of training with the All Blacks. Away from home again in Mount Manganui on the Bay of Plenty, then straight to Canberra to catch up with the rest of the team in Australia. A mere two days there before he would be facing a Brumbies squad currently sitting at the top of the table.
