Virgins Galore!

After surveying Jung’s memoir, Memories, Dreams, Reflections and the plethora of more recent biographical treatments of Jung, it became apparent that, if only euphemistically, the man’s genius was compounded with a most devilish personal reality. It appeared to slavishly replicate the figure of Goethe’s Faust who, in pact with the Devil proceeded to indulge a plethora of women, a virtual swarm of anima figures in the flesh (and for the flesh). Aside from Jung’s first love and wife Emma, he Faust-like enjoyed a small coterie of crypto-mistresses composed essentially of very young ladies. They were or had been his patients: e.g., Sabina Speilrein who was followed in turn by Antinonia (Toni) Wolff and then the more mature and scholarly than erotically involved ladies such as Dr. Marie-Louise von Franz and then Frau Aniela Jaffee, his secretary who co-authored his memoir, Memories, Dreams, Reflections. Von Franz, who was the gifted scholar of them all finally met Barbara Hannah, a British painter who was characterized as a “gawky” woman with bad teeth, was a lesbian “who later shared her life and home with Marie-Louise von Franz, did not disclose that she had fallen madly in love with Toni Wolff, who did not return any emotion beyond professional friendship.”46 Regardless, or because of, such convoluted relationships all were in deep transference with Jung and his devilish appeal, what appeared to suggest either overt or crypto (unconscious) love affairs compounded in their awe of the man, or the man as animus extraordinaire, Faust qua Philomen, but dressed in redness.
