When she woke up, she bit her tongue refusing to make any movie references. Where was she? At least she was dressed, but she wasn’t in bed with Julian and this was not the house. She was in a white room, it was barren. It reminded her of tales of alien abductions. Oh my God! Aliens abducted her from an alien.

She didn’t know why, but that was funny. Laugher poured out of her followed by the need to cry. Getting herself together she searched for a door. Not finding one she calmed herself down and began to meditate. What could she see with her spiritual eyes that weren’t apparent to her human ones?

“I’m proud of you, granddaughter.”

Aliya’s mouth opened and closed. The beauty of the woman standing before her stunned her. Her perfect black skin made her want to stand up and shout the song we have melanin. But it was more than that, it was the way she held herself with pride. There was no one anywhere that could doubt that this woman knew who and what she was and loved every minute of being herself.

Goals, for when I grow up Aliya whispered to herself.

There was also no doubt that they were related. She could see her mother in those brown eyes, and she could see herself many generations removed with much lighter skin but there she was. The thing she always missed even when her parents tried to tell her about it was a relationship with her past. With her guides, she formed a bridge with a time when both her people roamed, able to be who they were meant to be.

She forgot that she didn’t know where she was or that beyond those walls was trouble, getting lost in the eyes of the woman that stood before her.
