Alex stepped back into her office as she answered the phone. âHey, how are you feeling?â
âFurious. What are you doing? What could have possibly possessed you?â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âSenator Sterling. Are you actually investigating him for some sordid murder? My goodness, Alexandria, what are you thinking?â
âIâm thinking that he must have been fairly rattled to have called you within minutes of my meeting. I barely left his aide an hour ago.â Smiling, she sat down behind her desk and started writing notes to herself. âHow upset is he?â
âExtremely. Your father assured him there must be some mistake. To think, a daughter of mine would even think to accuse an upstanding member of Congress. How can you believe he murdered some woman?â
âI merely asked if the senator was in business with someone. But I never accused the man of murder.â
She could almost hear her mother deflating. âOh. Iâm sure this is all a misunderstanding then. He was quite upset. Your father promised him weâd talk to you and clear up all this ugliness.â
Which is exactly what the good senator intended. A little outrage went a long way among the blue bloods and their cronies. And then the daughter gets a call and politely told-but-not-told to back off. âNow tell me how youâre feeling.â
âTired all the time, but otherwise, I feel quite well.â
âIs Father there?â
âNot at the moment, dear. He left a few minutes ago for the club. A meeting with some stockholders, I believe. Alexandria, we need to talk.â
âAbout Father?â
âNo. Considering my health, I believe you should seriously consider moving back home as soon as possible.â
âWhy do I need to move home? You have Father, a house full of servants, doctors that make house calls, and if you need full-time nursing care, Father will arrange for it. What could I possibly do?â
âYour father met the nicest young man recently at the club. Harvard graduate, I believe. Tall, blond, blue eyes. Just the type you love.â
âMom.â
âAnd heâs single. Iâm thinking of having a small dinner party. And it would be far easier if you lived here. Iâm not sure commuting while dating is truly the best thing for a relationship.â
âMother, the only thing you need to be thinking about is getting better. Planning dinner parties or matchmaking is not restful or peaceful or good for your health right now.â
âWell, Iâm terribly sorry, Alexandria. Iâm your mother. I simply want the best for you.â
âI have the best.â
âItâs that man, isnât it? Youâre in love with him. And heâs just not suitable. Can you honestly see him at the helm of Fisher-Hawthorne?â
âHold on. First of all, Iâm not in love with him. Second, heâs never going to want to take the helm, the stern, or even the galley at Fisher-Hawthorne. Itâs not a matter for discussion.â
âWell, if youâre not in love with him, why do you stay there? You gave up a perfectly good law degree to go play detective, doing what? Spying on cheating husbands? Now, we understand that youâve always been a bit headstrong and independent, but time is passing you by, Alexandria.
