After breakfast, Ibn Saud gave detailed instructions to Elie, who needed no notes or pages of names and addresses. He remembered everything. Written instructions and directions, however, he did need to make sure he would find the places and the people he needed to contact. As his host read off the names, Elie was impressed with the important people he knew on a personal basis, key people in Lebanon, commanders in the Hezbollah, their contacts in the Syrian government and military, war lords in Lebanon, both Muslim and Christian, moderate and radical politicians in Iran. These were the people Elie was expected to convince of the need for peace in the area. He was beginning to realize the immensity of the responsibility Ibrahim had placed upon him, and he wondered if his friend was just a dreamer who had no practical ability to carry through in a way that made sense. Did he really think that he could talk these men so full of hatred into seeing the value of making peace with those they had been taught to hate since childhood, convince them to use their influence to persuade others to embrace their enemies? Yet that is what Jesus taught. Could one say that Jesus lacked common sense? Hardly. If anyone knew human nature, it was Jesus. He designed it. Maybe Ibrahim was just the one rare person who took his faith in Jesus seriously enough to believe that Jesus’ teachings could work, especially his teaching about forgiveness, which most Christians ignored as naïve and out of touch with reality. Maybe the world was in the mess it was in because people would not take Jesus seriously and give to the world his example of how to live as God’s children, and as brothers and sisters, treating others with mercy and forgiveness.

“Elie,” his host called out to him, “are you all right? You look as if you are a thousand miles away.”

“I am just overwhelmed with the number of important people you know and, I must say, the types of people. Doesn’t life get terribly complicated for you?”

“It does, but I have many things I want to accomplish, and it is important for me to know the good and the bad. It is a difficult juggling act, but I maintain my integrity, so I am respected by both kinds, and they trust me, because they know I am not scheming for myself.”

“Still, it is dangerous.”

“Yes, as you are about to find out. You now have all the information you need. I am giving you a car to use on your way, so you don’t have to depend on anyone else for transportation. The car has a built-in satellite telephone, so you can call anywhere with it. Don’t worry about the bill. You might want to call your family to keep them from worrying. But be discreet and brief, and if you call home, call from an out-of-the-way place. Call me anytime you need, either here at the house or on my satellite phone.
