In a recent anatomical study, the anatomy of the articular nerves to the thumb IP joint was thoroughly investigated to provide a basis for a surgical denervation procedure . Yet, to the best of our knowledge, the results of such a procedure have not yet been published in the literature [16].

Denervation of the Thumb MCP Joint

The technique of thumb MCP joint denervation corresponds to the technique used for finger MCP joints (as described above), except for the advantage that the thumb is supplied exclusively by digital nerves . Results are believed to be superior in the thumb because the innervation is much simpler in contrast to the second to fifth metacarpophalangeal, where it is combined from digital nerves and deep branch of ulnar nerve which is sometimes difficult to localize [6–8, 11].
