A shout to open the gates startled Sarah from her restless slumber. She sat up in bed, checked on Ruby then ran to the window. Her earlier disappointment when Calen’s army had returned sent her to bed weeping, but now she cried tears of joy as Ramstone’s army finally passed through the gates. With another check on Ruby, she rushed out of the room, smoothing her mussed hair as she ran.

A flurry of activity swept over her when she threw open the doors into the inner ward. The clamor of the armies echoed off the stone walls while she zigzagged through the masses. The fact that she was so much shorter than the men hampered her vision, and several times she hopped to see over them. Blinking back tears of frustration, Sarah whispered a curse under her breath. At a touch upon her shoulder, she spun around with Alex’s name on her lips.

“Oh, ’tis you,” she said.

Sir Jac smiled and extended his hand. She hesitated for a moment, then with her hand in his, followed him through the throng.

“Where is Alex?” she shouted. “Is he unharmed?” She realized her voice did not carry and nearly ran to keep up with his stride. He stopped and she collided into his back. He looked back, his closeness causing the odd feeling she had experienced the first time she met him.

“I—you—” She was mortified at the heat of her blush when she looked into his unsettling eyes. “Why did you stop so suddenly?”

Jac stepped aside. “There you be, milady.”

A few steps away, Galeron and Alex stood together, deep in conversation. Sarah forgot all about her odd sensations and flung herself into Alex’s arms. She kissed him, full on the mouth, paying no mind to who was about.
