Although completely unnoticed by the humans, benevolent spirit beings were also watching this childish competition. Two guardian angels and a warrior had followed Diane’s children onto the playground.
A guardian had been assigned to each of the boys since before birth. As their name implied they were purely defensive spirits and their only job was to guard the human will, making sure it remained fully functioning and free.
Under normal circumstances their protection would have been enough. But, Diane was well known in the spirit world and powerful in prayer. This, along with her high opposition level, made her—and everything she loved—an open target of the enemy, so the extra precaution of a warrior seemed warranted and several weeks ago one had been dispatched to join the group.
Vinyon was a warrior angel of the first rank and if human eyes could have seen him, they might have guessed him a page out of history. Ancient history.
Although the angel’s clothing was, in truth, a living extension of his being, what appeared to be garments told much about him and the role he had played in Kingdom work.
His light brown tunic seemed to be woven of heavy threads and it hung loosely to just below his hips. His legs were wrapped in a more finely woven fabric of dark brown. His boots were soft tan suede, almost moccasin in construction, and laced up to his knees with thin strips of leather. The wide belt at his waist appeared to be heavy, ornately carved leather. Jet black hair streamed shoulder length while piercing eyes, high cheekbones, broad forehead and prominent nose gave him the aura of an American Indian.
Vinyon had been a warrior for over fifteen hundred years and he wore the same form he had chosen when first assigned to earth.
This wasn’t a statement of pride or even preference of style on his part. He had simply found the form useful and never seen the need to change. It served him well and he cared little for anything beyond that.
His orders were simple: act as a support for the guardians and watch for opportunities to serve Diane’s children. It seemed far too small a task for one of the first rank but, like any good soldier, he didn’t question, only obeyed.
Vinyon had willingly joined this group and watched and learned but, so far, found very little use for his sword. The minor demons who presented themselves were dispatched by the guardians and it had been an uneventful tour of duty.
As to be expected, when Dwayne and Amanda started their competition, the spirits moved to a higher level of caution. Not that there was any cause for alarm; sexual attraction was natural for humans—even very young ones. Yet, the spirits also knew that many natural attractions could go wrong in a hurry if proper controls were not applied.
Many permissible—even blessed— appetites such as food, security, power, and even a desire for comfort were potential opportunities for the enemy. So, as Dwayne’s eyes locked on Amanda’s exposed navel and slowly sinking jeans, spiritual tensions rose.
