ALOPECIA AND THE MEDICAL ESTABLISHMENT
Alopecia falls in between medical specialties. Because hair is part of the skin, it is included in dermatology. Yet the cause of the most common form is hormones, which are the focus of a different specialty—endocrinology. Dermatologists can recognize it but lack a background in the internal hormonal causes. Endocrinologists understand hormones, but most have not been trained to recognize and treat their effects on skin and hair. Most often the connection between hormones and hair loss is not made, leaving women with alopecia without help.
My point is not to reproach dermatologists or endocrinologists. Most are conscientious and give great help to patients with conditions in their areas of expertise. This is scant comfort, however, for women with alopecia who are frustrated in their efforts to keep their hair. There are still very few physicians who treat alopecia. Unless you can consult one of them, you’ll need to study up on it yourself and come to your doctor with suggestions for workup and treatment. Some doctors are annoyed by such assertiveness, but many appreciate that patients want, and are entitled to, an active role in their own care. This and following chapters will prepare you to work with your doctor to get alopecia under control.
