TIP #92

Be strategic about where you place products in your store

As your customers browse through the aisles of your store, you have only a few seconds at best to capture their eyes and to motivate them to pick up an item to put in their basket. Bob Sickles, of his namesake grocery store in Little Silver, New Jersey, offers some very basic to-dos when setting out the layout of your store and products:

• Put your best sellers right at eye level. This way even your most distracted customers won’t miss them.

• Different eye levels catch different customers. Moms have different eye levels than kids. Sickles places the lollipops and colorful toys in buckets near the floor, while the catsup and dish soap are placed higher up. Place top sellers in more than one location. For example, in addition to putting olive oil where customers expect to find it, in the summer he also puts some in the produce section near the tomatoes. He always keeps the doughnuts near the baked-goods section, but in the fall he puts them near the apple cider case as well.

• Put the most commonly purchased items toward the back of the store. Since so many people buy milk and eggs, putting them in the back helps draw customers through the aisles to get to them. This way, people are forced to pass by the rest of the products, often leading them to buy something else as well.
