Compliance Management (not an ITIL process)

Although compliance management is not a formal ITIL process, it is still critical to overall IT service management and is often a logical complement to ITIL’s service design phase. Compliance management ensures that IT services are in line with the enterprise’s internal regulations as well as all governmental and/or legal regulations. Because compliance requirements vary from organization to organization, and from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, ITIL does not offer a detailed breakdown of compliance management but provides instead an overview of the most basic compliance management activities and how they interrelate with other service management processes.

Tools used during the compliance management process include the compliance register, which outlines all relevant compliance standards and provides a mechanism to ensure their enforcement, and the compliance review, which documents an organization’s internal and external compliance evaluations and notates the steps taken to improve on weak areas. There are no specific subprocesses or KPIs associated with the compliance management process. Organizations often find success in monitoring compliance standards by developing internal audits. The internal audits will function optimally when they hold an organization to compliance standards in excess of what would be required by an external audit from a government entity or third party.
