1. Little is known about these two leaders except that Reittman was a credentialed agronomist and Altman was an experienced administrator and refugee from Vienna.

2. Moses (Moishe) Gartenberg (1841–1916) and his brother Lazar (1833–1898) were foundational figures of the oil boom in Galicia. Moses and his wife, Ottilie (1843–1902), were also well known as philanthropists. The Rothschilds were a Jewish family of bankers and philanthropists, one of the world’s richest in the nineteenth century.

3. In April and May of 1940, on Joseph Stalin’s orders, the NKVD (Soviet secret police) executed approximately twenty-two thousand Poles, including large numbers of military officers, intellectuals, lawyers, priests, and other elites. The Soviet Union long blamed Nazi Germany for the crime and only officially acknowledged its complicity in the massacre at Katyń forest in 1990.

4. Between approximately 132 and 136 CE, Jews in the province of Judea rebelled against the Roman Emperor Hadrian. Their revolt takes its name from its leader, Shimon Bar Kochba. The Hasmonean Dynasty was established as a result of the Maccabeans’ successful rebellion against the Seleucid Dynasty, which began in 167 BCE.

5. See part I, chapter 12, note 2.
