Translation of plaque: The Jews of Long Island City, particularly the family of Ignatz Wohl, in appreciation for the kindness received by their countrymen in Campagna during the Second World War and for the personal intervention of Judge Alessandro Del Giorno, contributed to the reconstruction of the ex-convent for the purpose of welcoming the youth of Campagna.

Tagliaferri, Vince, and I left the old convent and made our way down the winding cobblestone road to the edge of town, where Tagliaferri stood in the middle of the main road leading to the town, paying no mind whatsoever to the fact that cars were coming in both directions. The drivers of the cars took one look at him and just stopped. He still had “it.” Tagliaferri stuck out his foot and dragged his heel across the road.

“This was the line. I put a big white line in chalk and wrote in five languages that it was the confine. No one went beyond it—ever.”

“I wouldn’t have either,” said Vince with a wink. You just didn’t mess with Tagliaferri. Not even now!

We continued on to a soccer field. “This is where I took the internees to play soccer. Many of them were very good. Wolff was a good player.”

It was time for lunch, and we went to the Ristorante/Hotel Avigliano for a delicious meal. Tagliaferri held court once again with the people of Campagna before we had to leave to drive him home to Salerno. For Vince and me, another piece of history had clicked into place.
