David sat on the barstool for a long time, taking intermittent drinks of the bourbon and shaking his head.

Chelsea. The vision of her in the cyborg’s arms reappeared in his mind. Her smooth skin, ample breasts…

These thoughts of Chelsea couldn’t have come at a more inconvenient time. Rather than be fascinated by this unexpected ability of his creation, he was allowing himself to get sidetracked from the main focus of his work—to get the cyborg built and out into the world. To finally show them what he’d done, accept their accolades and their well-deserved respect. He still had one more thing to do for this project to be complete, and now was the time to do it.

He didn’t want to be rich. He’d never done any of this for money—although one would think him insane if they knew he’d spent the last ten years doing something just to prove a point. And maybe he was insane. It hardly mattered. The ten years were gone, now; nothing he could do about that.

He thought again of the perfectly operational cyborg he’d created with his own mind and hands. He’d wanted a reckoning, wanted those jerk-offs who’d fired him to eat their “employee exit” questionnaire. He’d been humiliated, and why? So they could feel superior; meanwhile he’d seen the future of cybernetics in a building full of fools who couldn’t see water in a rain gauge.

He put the bottle of bourbon back on the shelf and rose. He had things to do. He was about to become famous. He ought to feel good right now, but as he walked back down the hall toward the lab he wished he did.
