Thus far, for the interpretation of the word âqawwamunâ, the âsuperiorityâ of men over women has been most commonly used, followed by âhaving authority overâ. Less common interpretations include âtake care ofâ or âare responsible forâ (Abou Bakr, 2015, pp. 44â62). Some authors have even suggested that the term could mean that men are the âservantsâ of women (El Fadl, 2014, p. 210). The last two interpretations emphasise that the man has the duty to take care of the family, and the woman has the right not to work and be looked after. Many participants, however, shared the former and not the latter interpretations.
