Thus far, for the interpretation of the word “qawwamun”, the “superiority” of men over women has been most commonly used, followed by “having authority over”. Less common interpretations include “take care of” or “are responsible for” (Abou Bakr, 2015, pp. 44–62). Some authors have even suggested that the term could mean that men are the “servants” of women (El Fadl, 2014, p. 210). The last two interpretations emphasise that the man has the duty to take care of the family, and the woman has the right not to work and be looked after. Many participants, however, shared the former and not the latter interpretations.
