Chapter Sixteen

Score exhaled. The last thing he wanted to do was tell her anything about shifters. Would she remember it when the Sniff & Whiff wore off? He couldn’t risk it. If it got out, the heat would come down on Crooked Arrow pack for divulging shifter secrets to a human who clearly had no vested interest in keeping them. Merely because her father was a shifter didn’t mean she’d keep the secrets. Actually, she was more likely not to keep them since he’d not been a part of her life.

Not for the first time, Score wondered if her father had abandoned her as a kid or not known her mother was pregnant?

Though Bliss had plenty of questions, Score had his own fair share that needed answering.

“Score?” She put her hand on his arm.

A surge of electricity flooded throughout his body. His wolf howled at the sensation. The woman definitely had an effect on the two of them. “Yeah?”

“You didn’t answer me. I asked you to teach me about my kind.”

“There’s plenty of time for that, Bliss.” Fuck, I hate lying. “And you’ll probably remember the answers you need when the Sniff & Whiff wears off.” For fuck’s sake, Stitches better get me some answers quick.

“What if it doesn’t wear off? What if I’m like this forever?” Tears welled in her eyes.

He wasn’t at his place yet, one of several cabins located behind the main ranch house and the bunkhouse, but he couldn’t let her cry without reassuring her. Though by damn, he wasn’t very good with consoling crying women. And how was he supposed to handle a woman who thought he was her boyfriend when he wasn’t much more than a stranger. Granted, he had a hell of an attraction to her, and his wolf thought she was the one for them.

He braked, shifted into Park, and put his arm around her. “You won’t be like this forever.”

God, but if she was, would he have to pretend to be her boyfriend for the rest of his life? Not that this was such a bad thing. He could definitely see himself in that role, though he’d like to come by the role naturally. Not through some messed up means of her memories being stolen and replaced with a crazy reality. On the topic of crazy reality, he wasn’t looking forward to seeing how she’d deal with figuring out she couldn’t shift into a wolf.

He placed his lips on her temple before he realized what he’d done. Now he couldn’t jerk away though. She’d get more upset.

She snuggled closer, despite the center console. “I’m so glad you’re a part of my life. I couldn’t do this without you.”

She wouldn’t be in this jam if it wasn’t for him giving her the Sniff & Whiff, so he wasn’t quite ready to give himself a pass on this one.

“I got you.” And he fully intended to do just that. He planned to help, protect, and guide her throughout the entire process. No matter how long it lasted.
