Repression

During Mohammad Khatami’s period as president, from 1999 to 2005, the government permitted some public demonstrations. In recent years, however, strikers and protestors have been beaten and arrested by the police and sentenced to long terms in prison. Since 2006, students with liberal views have been barred from entering higher education, while university teachers suspected of disloyalty to the regime have been suspended and fired from their jobs. Campaigners for social reform, such as women’s rights activists, have also been persecuted.
