Investigative Story Components

To write a great story you must gather great information. So let’s break down “All Work. No Pay” into its components to see what goes into a good investigative story.

Something Important Is at Stake

In an investigative project, you will ask sources to provide knowledge, opinions, analysis, memories and emotions even though doing so might get them grief—from their boss, family, friends, neighbors or customers. You expect readers to invest time reading and thinking about your story only to learn something unpleasant.

Sources will help you and readers will invest their time when you can show that something important is at stake that needs to be disclosed and exposed. It might be the death of one person; the aesthetics or culture of a neighborhood; or money lost, stolen or misspent. In “All Work. No Pay” it is the inhumanity of a drug treatment program that offers little treatment and instead forces people to work under slave labor conditions.
