The History of Interrogation

Interrogation procedures have evolved considerably since their initial inception in part due to laws regulating use of force by police. Such techniques have become increasingly sophisticated over time, progressing from overt physical violence to covert physical tactics, and finally to psychological coercion sans physical force (Leo, 2008).

Prior to 1930, blatant physical abuse was used to elicit confessions. Police would commonly beat suspects with their fists or other objects. Officers would additionally inflict cigarette burns on or administer electric shocks to uncooperative subjects. Females in custody were often dragged or pulled by their hair, while males would have their testicles pulled or twisted. These savage techniques began to change in 1931 with the publication of the Report on Lawlessness in Law Enforcement, which publicized the pervasive issue of police brutality against suspects in custody (Costanzo & Krauss, 2012).
