The practice of science, as with any form of disciplined study, is profoundly shaped by value commitments.

Values enter science in a number of ways. The first point of entry is the selection of the problem to be investigated – the choice of the problem, who makes the choice and on what grounds. Society, the political realities of power, prejudice and value systems will influence even the “purest” science.

Often, it is the source of funding that defines what problem is to be investigated.

If funding comes from government sources, then it will reflect the priorities of the government — whether space exploration is more important than the health problems of the inner city poor.

Or whether nuclear power should be developed rather than solar energy.
