The president’s elite protection detail, considered to be tight, effective, and the world’s best, has released no statement concerning this blatant breach of security.

Sympathetic correspondence and gestures of condolences have poured into Babylon from nations all over the world.

As we pulled in to the departure drop-off area at de Gaulle, I tucked my phone into my jacket, thanking the cab driver, who mumbled something under his breath. Once inside the busy airport, I couldn’t help but notice the heightened security. Police personnel, X-ray machines, body scanners, drug-sniffing dogs, and the ever-present surveillance cameras—these were all being employed to ensure the safety of each departing flight. I suppose this could be traced to the fear that the attack on the president could be part of some larger network of terror attacks. I boarded my flight, taking my seat in 14A, and by the time we took off, I was fast asleep.

I awoke to the wheels touching down in Istanbul, where my one-hour layover passed quickly. After napping during the three-and-a-half-hour flight, I was famished, so I grabbed the first sandwich and coffee I saw upon disembarking. Big mistake, as it was the worst meal I’d eaten in recent memory. The airport was overflowing with multiple flights departing to Babylon, as it seemed the whole world was seeking passage to the ancient city. I boarded the packed plane, remaining fully awake on the Istanbul-to-Baghdad leg of my journey. I was hoping to secure something edible from the flight attendant during the course of the two-hour, fifty-five-minute flight. I must say, the onboard meal, consisting of chicken, rice, and broccoli, was considerably more to my liking.

I arrived at Baghdad International at 11:50 p.m. and was met by a driver who informed me he had been assigned to transport me to Babylon, where lodging had already been arranged. Though the president was gone, and the administration was understandably in a state of shock, it had nevertheless not suffered a loss of efficiency. The driver uttered not a word in the eighty-minute midnight ride. As I had already slept earlier, I decided to jot down some questions on my notepad, among them:
