Chapter 7

Tiffany kept a close eye on the clock as she packed her clothes. Her church was always holding events and missions to help those who were less fortunate than them and she always made sure to be as involved as she could. Today, the church’s youth group would travel to a neighborhood in South Brooklyn that had been so devastated by a deadly blizzard over the winter that a lot of children were left homeless and without families to help them. There was a shelter at Rockaway Beach specifically for the homeless children but there were so many of them that the conditions were pretty rough, and Rockaway Beach wasn’t close. The youth group would gather at the church and travel to Rockaway to deliver clothes to the children and set up a soup kitchen to feed them dinner. Since it was a bit of a trek, the group was going to stay overnight and make sure all the children had breakfast in the morning too. Tiffany was used to doing this kind of thing, but she felt nervous as she picked out her clothes and put them in her backpack - this was the first time that she would go on a mission with David.

Once the youth group was gathered at the church, they all began to board the bus. Tiffany was starting to feel nervous, she didn’t see David anywhere! She kept looking down the street in the direction that David always came from, but she didn’t see him coming. Finally, she reluctantly boarded the bus, walking all the way to the back and sitting in an empty seat. She sighed, disappointed, and placed her backpack under her seat as she looked out the window, watching the pavement go by as the bus began to move slowly. She was starting to worry when all of a sudden, the bus came to a screeching halt - the doors swung open and David rushed onto the bus, panting and making his way down the aisle as the bus started moving again.

“Over here!” Tiffany shouted, holding her hand up in the air so David could see where she was.

David hurried to the back and plopped down next to her, dropping his backpack to the floor. “Phew! Thanks. I was so nervous I had missed the bus - work was crazy this morning - I left as quickly as I could. I guess it was just soon enough! Someone must be looking out for me…” he winked at Tiffany.

Tiffany smiled, “I was nervous you weren’t going to make it too - I was looking for you. I’m really glad you came.”

David smiled back at her, “I’m glad I came too.”

The weather was warm enough for the youth group to set everything up outside. Tiffany and David were both assigned to hand out dinner to the children and they had just finished setting everything up when the sun began to set over the ocean. They served the children spaghetti and meatballs, soup, salad, and cake for dessert.
