Certain medications are prescribed for certain sleep issues. It’s important to consider your initial diagnosis and what your doctor says. The medications discussed below may be indicated for acute insomnia, chronic insomnia, or something other than sleep issues. Some are over-the-counter (OTC) medications; others are prescription medications. I’ll give you an idea of what they’re used for and how they affect sleep.

OTC Sleep Aids

Some sleep aids are available over the counter, a.k.a. you can purchase them without a prescription. Most of them include diphenhydramine, which is the active ingredient in a popular antihistamine that’s pink. Regardless, this antihistamine has a natural sedative effect. The other class of other-the-counter drugs includes doxylamine, the primary ingredient in Unisom. Doxylamine is an antihistamine normally used to relieve seasonal allergies (and, in some cases, the common cold). The natural effect of these drugs: they make you drowsy. If you’re drowsy, guess what, you have a higher likelihood of falling asleep.
