JOIN THE CLUB

‘[The] requisites for a Statesman were few and insignificant indeed; that it was the only business which needed no apprenticeship, no study, no training; that it was enough to belong to Brooks’s or White’s, and to make fine speeches in Parliament.’

‘The Political Examiner’, The Examiner19

In a world where making an impression was part of the game, being seen in the right place was everything. For gentlemen, one’s politics dictated one’s club and whether you would be hitting the gambling tables in Brooks’s on Pall Mall or in White’s on St James’s Street. It was possible to do both, but few men had the connections to pull that off. White’s is the oldest club in London and is still only open to men today. It first opened its doors in 1693 and was soon the most exclusive address in town, eventually becoming the unofficial headquarters of the governing Tories in the Georgian era.
