Answering the ‘but is it the law?’ question

Thus far, legal authority has been distinguished from other forms of authority, and it has been posited that reflective practice which identifies these distinctions will help to show where there may be conflicts to be addressed. However, conflicts are not confined to inconsistencies between legal and other forms of authority. Sometimes different forms of legal authority seem to be inconsistent with each other. In order to better understand this, it may be helpful to consider the various forms of legal authority the practitioner or student is likely to encounter.
