Mrs. Quincy
While I had agreed to go to lunch, it took some convincing to get me to leave. And by convincing, I mean Scarlett had to marionette me out of there. Kane hadnât woken up yet, and that worried me. Scar said he was probably catching up on the copious hours of sleep he missed every night, but, big surprise, that didnât help. During lunch, I kept checking my phone between reluctant bites of my mediocre hot dog, hoping Dr. Costa would contact me if anything changed. There was nothing the whole hour. I just sat and listened to AJ talk about a steel-bending guy who used to be in his piano class, one of the students who didnât come back after the bombing. His parents probably pulled him out.
Novak asked me how I was doing a few times, but it wasnât a conversation I wanted to have. I believed everything Scarlett had said before. I trusted her, but⦠it wasnât that easy. AJ derailed the conversation whenever someone mentioned Kane as if he knew how my brain worked. He did. Honestly, he was probably more in tune with my emotions than I was myself.
The bell rang for the next set of midterms and I practically fell out of my seat. Everyone else had tests to take, so I made my way back to the infirmary alone. I got a phone call halfway to the doors of the class hall.
âDad?â I answered carefully, rubbing my chilly arms. It wouldnât have been so cold if I had my cardigan, but⦠well, you know.
âScottlin!â My dad chimed on the other end. It had been just a couple of weeks since I had heard from both him and my mom, they called once the first week of October. âI was hoping to catch you before your next test, are you on your way to it now?â
I bit my cheek. Maybe this was one of those moments where I was going to have to be responsible. âActually, Dadâ¦â
âThat doesnât sound good.â
âNo, itâs nothing terrible!â At least it couldâve been a lot worse. âItâs not like I managed to get expelled or anything. Itâs just⦠something happened. Iâm finishing my tests tomorrow.â
He was silent for a moment, I hated it when he did that. It was an expectant sort of silence that either meant he was waiting for an apology or an explanation. I could never tell which was which. âWell, are you going to tell me what happened, or am I just going to have to take a lucky guess?â
I sighed. âMy Ability Training test was a little bit more dangerous than expected.â
âWhat? Are you hurt? Scott, whatâs going onââ
âDad, calm down, please. Iâm okay, nothing happened to me. Just someone Iâ¦â I pursed my lips together and pulled open the building door. âSomeone I care about a lot. He got hurt pretty bad and Iâmâ well, pretty shaken up about it, thatâs all. The doctor didnât think itâd be a good idea for me to take my midterms like this.
