The cartilage/cushion between the upper leg and the lower leg that functions to absorb some of the load you take with each step, the meniscus of the knee was once thought to be a useless remnant of the leg muscle. Today, experts understand that the meniscus has many functions, including joint stability and congruity.
The meniscus is often injured, although this is often the result of degenerative tears over time. The injury often occurs in people between 13 and 40 years of age as a result of falls or accidents. In older people, it’s often caused by a quick turn or repeated stresses. Because the meniscus receives its blood supply by diffusion and has a low metabolic rate, healing is often slow. To prevent meniscus injuries, avoid trauma and hard falls to the knee region. As you get older, avoid quick pivots. Follow the advice of your attending medical personnel because they know the severity of your condition.
