Cogs are invisible. Rock Stars are not. Cogs provide minimal value. Rock Stars provide a lot more!

We are going to look at a mix of online, offline, and blended methods to help you achieve expert status and increase visibility and help you move toward Rock Star.

Some of these methods may seem far out, some may not be applicable to you now, and some absolutely will be. Keep an open mind. And be creative here.

But my Job Won’t Let Me

There may be some restrictions on what you can do based on where you work. For example, some companies do not want people talking to the press unless explicitly authorized. Some, like the SANS Institute, actively encourage people to talk to the press and identify themselves as working with SANS.

Some companies, such as Apple, are highly secretive and strongly discourage public interaction. Others, like Microsoft, are the opposite. At one point, Microsoft actively encouraged thousands of employees to start openly blogging about their work.

In almost any job, some of what follows will apply. There are some exceptions such as maybe if you are some kind of spy under deep cover.

I was working at a military base recently and someone there mentioned that a book they were using in a class was great. “Major ABC wrote that,” said someone else. It was clear the men and women held this Major in high regard. Learning he was the author of a technical book they liked made them even more impressed.

If a career military man can use some of these techniques, you almost certainly can. Some creativity might be required, but we all tend to be creative in this field. This career military man actually seemed to be a Rock Star, or at least well on the path. Once he’s retired from active duty it’s a good bet he’ll have plenty of choices for fun and rewarding work.
