Adjusting Browser Privacy and Security Settings
Information professionals should advise those who use Internet Explorer to surf the web that it is a good idea to use the InPrivate browsing feature whenever possible. This feature, according to Microsoft, allows you to surf the web “but things like passwords, search history, and webpage history are deleted when you close the browser.” Another important feature is “Do Not Track.” This is an option under the advanced security settings. While it will not stop all tracking, it can help limit tracking by sending a message to websites that users do not want to be tracked. Another possible privacy protection that is offered by Microsoft is “Tracking Protection.” When using tracking protection a user would install a “Tracking Protection List” that Microsoft likens to a “do not call” list. Internet Explorer then “blocks third-party content from sites on the list” and limits what information they can collect.[28]
Those searching the Internet using Mozilla Firefox can do several things to increase the level of privacy they enjoy while on the web. Under the privacy settings in Mozilla Firefox, a user can select “Tell sites that I do not want to be tracked.” A user can also select “Always use private browsing mode” and refuse to accept third party cookies or limit them to sites that the user has visited.[29] In the security settings of Mozilla Firefox, a user can also elect to be warned when sites try to install add-ons, block reported attack sites, and block reported web forgeries.[30] A good practice for web surfing generally is to regularly clear your search history. This is especially important if the user is accessing the Internet on a public computer. The next person who uses the computer can access your history, which may include information you wish to keep private.
Privacy and security settings can be increased on other web browsers as well. As libraries generally control these settings for their stationary computers, it may not be an issue for them, but it is still advisable for them to share this information with patron Wi-Fi users. Youth should be advised to monitor their privacy and safety settings. Employees should receive education in this as well for those using laptops. Security departments may wish to contribute to employee education and participate in joint or integrated training sessions.
