Put those two things together, and we have a big problem. News outlets are mostly focused on answering the question “What’s the most dramatic thing that’s happened in the last few hours?” Both biases above push them toward stories that make the world seem alarming.

Social media have dialed this up to a further extreme, and for the same reasons. The posts that grab attention and the accounts that attract followers are often those that do the most effective job of being provocative and critical. But the net result is to give us all the impression of a world that’s relentlessly hostile, with the hostility coming from groups we perceive as implacably opposed to us.
