On 9 July 1941 the 13th Panzer Division took Zhitomir. Troops of the 16th Infantry Division took the Lyubar bunker and captured the bridge over the Slutsk. The Stalin Line had been pierced. Kiev was the next objective. Panzer Group 1 received the following order: “…seize a deep bridgehead east of the Dniepr near Kiev as a base for the continuation of the campaign east of the river.”

The armored divisions of Panzer Group 1 stormed ahead, eventually leaving the infantry trailing behind them by as much as 200 kilometers. The 95th Infantry Division reached Shepetovka. By 21 July it reached the Zhitomir area, which had withstood enemy attacks from the north and south. It finally arrived at the Dniepr, south of Kiev, and Hill 142, which was occupied by the enemy.

“We must take this hill,” the division commander explained to the commanders of his regiments and battalions. “If we can take it the ring will be closed to the south. The 71th Infantry Division will be joining our attacks on the left.”
