The sound of Katie’s voice almost made her forget the ache in her wrists and her knee. The pain still raged enough to where she was nauseated. A white man with jet-black hair and kind green eyes sat beside her, while Trent held his phone to her ear. Katie spoke and Teal tried to tune out everything to listen. She was tired, yet no one would let her sleep. She had to pee and she felt the urge to get up and move.
“Damn, I can’t believe you are there and I am here. You were right about this polar vortex crap. I just wanted a winter wonderland wedding and now all this.”
Teal swallowed and tried to speak. “D—don’t worry.” She was still cold and the occasional shiver racked her body, sending out shards of sharp pain. “I—I’m not mad.” She could hear as the front door opened and the woman who’d called Trent her man walked in, speaking about pain meds from a past surgery and something about more snow. Katie’s voice pulled her back to the conversation.
“Shit, you sound bad. Trent told Logan he needs to check you for bleeding and broken bones.” Teal thought about her wrist and her knee, both hurt like hell and might be broken. Then her friend cautiously added, “He said he may have to shift around some of your clothes.”
If Teal could bolt upright and leave, she would have. Granted, she was concerned with the ache growing in her belly, but she was not happy about Trent seeing her in her unmentionables. Plus, this shit was entirely his fault. Closing her eyes, she cursed herself for coming out here.
Teal lifted her hand and placed it to the throbbing on her head. When she looked at her hand she found blood on her fingertips. A soft cloth was placed over the wound and the woman who’d spoken to her earlier asked if she was allergic to Percocet. When Teal said no, the woman shook a bottle and handed it to Trent, who moved from her sight.
“Teal?” Katie called.
“Hmm?”
“I think you might be stuck there for a while. We called the ranger’s station and found he is stuck with campers in an RV, and this little town can’t seem to get an ambulance to you. Logan said that Trent was in the Marine Corps and he can take care of you. But I’m worried—”
Trent took the phone away from her ear. Teal could hear him tell Katie to call back in about twenty minutes. He planned to check her for injuries and dress her in a sweatshirt and sweat pants. That actually made Teal happy because she was still cold as hell.
“Do you guys mind?” Trent politely asked the neighbors to skedaddle. Teal listened as they told him to call him if they needed anything else and left. When Trent came back into Teal’s view, he started unwrapping the dressings they’d used to cover her.
“Wait,” she said and he stilled his hands. “Can you take this off my neck?”
“You could have a neck injury.
