Chapter Eleven

“I was worried that you wouldn’t be coming back to the central fire for a meal before heading to your cabin,” Morning Sun said with a smile as she stood from where she was sitting on a log and handed Edward a plate of food as he approached. He gave her a small smile before settling down to sit and eat.

“I was approached by your father,” Edward said between bites of venison stew and corn mash. “It would have become violent if Brown Bear hadn’t been there. Though the chief did give your father a good punch to the gut.”

“Is my father alright?” Morning Sun asked in a worried voice. She might not agree with her father’s ideas and plans, but she wouldn’t want him to come to any harm.

“He was able to walk away. But I am sure the Chief left a good impression on him not to approach me again,” Edward explained.

“What did my father say to you?”

“He said that it was my fault that you left his family. That I put ideas in your head that led to you defying him,” Edward said, keeping his voice soft so that only she could hear him over the chatter of all that had been gathered.

“What am I going to do about him?” Morning Sun asked with a sigh, lowering her head to her hands as she cradled it, resting her elbows on her knees. Edward set his half-eaten plate of food down and began to rub her back slowly, trying to think how to best comfort her.

“I don’t think there is anything to do, Morning Sun. Your father is set in his ways and thoughts. You have already made the best decision to become a part of the older couple’s family. Remember the good service you are bringing them,” Edward said.

“Yes, I know my actions are good. But how do I stop my father from harassing you or anyone else just because he doesn’t like what they are doing?” Morning Sun explained.

“That may be a task left up to the Chief. He may have a few of his warriors keep a closer watch on Red Stag to ensure that he doesn’t try to approach anyone else like he did me this evening,” Edward explained. “Put your faith in Brown Bear that he’ll know what to do.”

“I’ve done so already, Edward. I know Brown Bear is a good leader. I simply don’t like feeling helpless,” Morning Sun said as she lifted her head from her hands and looked into Edward’s brown eyes.

“I understand, Morning Sun, I really do. I felt helpless when I received my sister’s letter about what my father was planning to force her to do. I felt helpless when Yellow Moon showed up in camp and explained what was about to happen. But when we are faced with situations we feel we have no control over, sometimes opportunities will arise,” Edward said softly as he looked down into Morning Sun’s eyes. Morning Sun forced a small smile to her face, trying to show her appreciation for what Edward was trying to tell her.
