The methodologies of the original position and of extended preferences provide, then, two methods of COMMENSURATION that are especially applicable to situations requiring interpersonal comparisons of options.

Perhaps we can gather the threads. Schematically, we have the following situation when it comes to methods of COMMENSURATION via translation.

To assess options ϕl, ..., ϕn according to standards Σ1, ..., Σm

identify a proxy standard Σi* for each standard which is not readily associated with reliable, intersubjective measurements;

cardinalize scores in relation to standards via Neumann/Morgenstern or objective-correlates techniques;

identify rates of substitution among these standards by using "willingness-to-pay" methods;

aggregate across individuals, where appropriate, by normalizing a la the original position or by determining an extended preference ordering;

test the resulting technology of commensuration against the determinacy, sensitivity, and robustness criteria keeping in mind the circumstances of and conditions for its use.
