This, together with the quality of support a manager provides along the way, will have a major impact on a colleague’s rise in confidence and ultimate success at work. The better the support, and the more opportunities to learn, the greater the commitment in return as individuals become more determined to reap the rewards of this investment both for themselves and the organization.

For this equation to work well employees also need to be encouraged to take responsibility and:

• feel that it is their job to learn about the business and improve it

• understand how their responsibilities link to the organization’s goals

• ask for assignments that promote the growth of a range of relevant skills
