“As you can see, we’ve spared no expense in choosing the best and safest equipment for the camp. The wellbeing of our campers is of utmost concern.” Kye wiped his damp palms on his jeans. The insurance adjuster had insisted on visiting the camp in person when usually sending in the brochures and activity details were enough to determine a premium. It had to be connected to that anonymous tip Grace told him about.
Tony adjusted his folder in his hands and flipped through papers. “Yes, we have the details of your equipment here.” Tony looked like he’d rather be anywhere than here swatting horse flies.
“What happened there?” Tony pointed to the exterior of the dining hall scheduled for repair later this week.
Kye stifled a groan. Why didn’t he fix it sooner?
“Everything else is so well maintained…” Tony’s voice trailed off leaving Kye to fill in his blanks.
“I’ll complete those repairs before the campers arrive.” Kye avoided the question. Tony needed to conclude that extreme sports didn’t equate to extreme risk and a dining hall signed by a bear’s claws wouldn’t help his case.
Tony scribbled more notes, paused, looked up, and then wrote some more, never once making eye contact with Kye. “I was here,” Tony shuffled through his notes, “less than a year ago. I don’t remember that damage. What happened?”
Kye jammed his hands into his front jean pockets. “We had an issue with a black bear, but the Ministry of Natural Resources sent out a guy who collared and relocated him.”
Tony finally looked at him. “That’s right. I saw that on the news.”
So he already knew about the bear. Was Tony trying to test his integrity with a trick question?
“Bears are normal for all the campgrounds around here,” Tony said. He made another note. “It would only become an issue if you were negligent in some way.” Tony peered over the top of his clipboard and drilled his gaze into Kye.
Kye fought the urge to squirm like a reprimanded schoolboy. Did Tony know? Lord, please bless my honesty. “We did leave some food out one night after a staff picnic, which might have attracted the animal.” Kye held Tony’s stare. Since they had no proof, he didn’t add Ron’s suspicions that someone purposefully baited the bear. “But it’s all taken care of now.”
The adjuster made another silent note and stepped closer to inspect the dining hall’s back door where the worst of the exterior damage remained.
Kye wanted to kick himself. He could have had this fixed already if he hadn’t been so distracted with Grace.
“That’s a lot of damage for one bear.”
“Yes, it is. But it was only one bear. We’ve had no other sightings since he’s been relocated.” Kye clamped his mouth shut. This wasn’t the time to start babbling. Sweat drizzled down his back. What he had hoped was a cursory visit from their insurance provider suddenly felt like much more.
Laughter trickled up from the lake. Grace and Jeremy splashed around in the gentle waves as they returned to the beach.
