CHAPTER EIGHT

Levi paced the living room, wondering when Ruth Anne would be home. He’d already given Joshua a bottle, bathed him, and put him down for a nap. He loved his alone time with his son. It was okay to cry, be silly, or just cuddle him without having to worry what Ruth Anne thought. He was still angry at God, still worried if Joshua would be snatched away from them at a young age, but it was impossible not to love him, no matter the risks to Levi’s heart. But somewhere over the past three months, he’d lost Ruth Anne. It was like she no longer needed him. She was quiet, did her household chores, and tended to Joshua. But it seemed like they’d lost whatever had drawn them together in the first place. Levi suspected that was mostly his fault, but he wasn’t sure what to do about it.

He sat down on the couch, hungry. And waited. Then Joshua started to cry, so Levi went to his son, changed his diaper, brought him into the living room, and held him. “I love you,” he whispered. “And I’m sorry it took me so long to tell you that. I just don’t want to lose you. Not ever.” He pulled the baby closer, careful not to let the tip of his beard brush against Joshua’s soft face. Joshua smiled, and Levi smiled back at him. “It’s a gut thing I took off work so early, or no one would have been home when your mammi came to drop you off.” Levi walked to the window and peered outside, still wondering when his wife would be home.
