THE MORNING AFTER THE PILL
As she got dressed to meet J, I practised âthinking.â When sheâd passed out in bed at about four this morning, Iâd analysed the evening in as much detail as I could bear.
The thing that stood out to me and seemed to have strong relevance to the way things had gone was that the more Sarah had caved and given in to her, the more annoyed Iâd become. In fact, Iâd despised her for being so weak. As the pill had made her more loved up toward Sarah, it had obviously had the opposite effect on me. Iâd hated every single second-touching, kissing, being touched, being kissed. It had all repulsed me! Sarah had repulsed me!
So now, I was trying to recreate that same repulsion from last night in the hope that if she loved Sar enough, she wouldnât be able to hurt her.
But I couldnât. I loved Sarah too much, but was still repulsed by the idea of anything sexual between us and this was what she was going to use against us.
J knocked on the door at eleven rousing me from my thoughts. She hadnât heard me for the last half hour, so I tucked the victory away to concentrate on what she had planned for him.
After looking surprised at my hair and bruised face, he gave me a quick kiss and we got in his car, driving off to get some lunch.
âJ, I think we should talkâ I said in as sombre a voice I could manage.
âOkay, sure. Whatâs up?â
âI had a threesome with Sarah and Marc last night.â I kept my voice steady and calm, and watched his smile disappear.
âOh. What happened to your work do?â he asked, swallowing.
âI never had a work do. I think Iâm in love with Sarah, but I needed to find out for certain. Iâm sorry.â
âHold on a moment, this isâ¦what? What are you saying?â he was so confused, his face was twisting as he tried to register it all. âYou blew me off last night so you could find out if you were in love with your best friendâ¦by fucking her AND her boyfriend? Are you for real?â
âWatch the road, Jâ I warned as he nearly rear ended the car in front. We slammed to a halt.
âWhy are you telling me this? Is this your sick way of breaking up with me?â
âNo, this is my way of being honest with you.â
There was a heavy silence in the car as he continued driving, but then he took me by surprise as he swerved into a pub car park and stopped the engine.
âWhat do you want, Aoif?â he asked angrily.
âI donât know, I havenât seen the menu yet.â
âStop playing fucking games with me! You know what I meanâ he shouted, making me jump. I sighed and looked out of the window.
âI donât know J. Right now, I just donât know.â
âDo you want us to break up?â
âI think I need some time.â
âWhat the FUCK? I mean, seriously, what the fuck? Who the fuck are you?â He hit the steering wheel in frustration.
