Carly came to wonder how she found this window in her room to be such a calming catalyst in her current situation. “Still nothing on them. Where are they?” she took a deep breath to reclaim the quiet place once again. She couldn’t shake the feeling they had missed some vital piece of this ongoing puzzle.

Ash’s call this morning only confirmed the lack of information about the girls. He exhausted all his contacts for any information and neither girl had been seen anywhere in the area. Carly instinctively knew that was a horrible sign. If something didn’t show up soon, they were going to lose those two young girls.

She spotted Ruby coming back from David’s and waved to her. Her friend certainly stayed a long time at the man’s place. The thought brought a rare glimmer of pleasure to Carly. “Might be a romance in the air.”

Funny how that thought brought Ash to mind. He wanted to rekindle their relationship. Carly knew him well, and yes, she missed him in her life. “But... I can’t.”

Carly could hear Ruby moving around downstairs, and she wanted company. One thing she found she liked to do with Ruby was cooking. The lady already had taught her so many new dishes and how she could pare them down for just her or a smaller number.

“I do like how they all come together and share everything, good or bad.”

Carly moved away from the window and gathered her sweater to go join Ruby. She’d been here a week already, and it indeed wasn’t what she expected.

“Carly, hello! On the way back from David Fisher’s haus I was thinking about you. Then I saw you wave from the window.”

Once in the kitchen, Ruby began pulling out ham, mustard, and bread to make sandwiches. Once she had them wrapped in waxed paper, she reached up to the space between the top of her cabinets and the ceiling, taking down a picnic basket.

She placed two frozen water bottles in a basket, put ham sandwiches on top and two apples. “We have done so little since you arrived. I usually take my guests on planned farm experiences. Would you like to go on a walk and see the farm?”

“I would love to see the farm. Let me run up and get my other shoes.”

“I’ll gather a few more things while you do that.”

A bit later, she and Ruby walked along a dirt path. The sky looked so blue out in the open hills. Carly breathed in the fresh air as she strolled beside Ruby. The fields were bright spring green with all the new crops coming up. She’d been surprised at how many types of vegetables they planted.

“Our land goes clear across the hill to the trees on the east border. We have many more acres to the north, and of course, you know David Fisher’s place starts where the store is located.”

“I remember the for-sale sign. Have you two figured out how to settle the problem?”

“Jah, we have discussed the problem he has.
