Under-activated proprioceptive systems

What we see in children with under-activated proprioceptive systems is movements that are poorly modulated:

The tactile system

The tactile system forms the last component of our building blocks and is probably the easiest to understand. On a functional level, it’s almost completely intertwined with the proprioceptive system. In books about sensory integration they are often grouped together and called the somatosensory system.

The proprioceptive system is concerned with sensations and feedback from within the body (joints and muscles) while the tactile system is concerned with sensations from outside the body – touch in all its forms. Touch receptors are located all over the body – there’s a great illustration of this called the homunculus – it’s worth Googling to have a look at it. Some areas of our body have far more receptors than others. Think about your own body – most of us are far more sensitive to touch on our faces than, for example, our elbows. Different receptors have different functions – detecting pain or temperature or discriminating between shapes or textures.

It’s helpful to separate the tactile system from the other systems when thinking about children who have missed out on a lot of experiences, because, as we’ll see, it can be a useful starting point for rebuilding underdeveloped systems.
