Chapter 12

Claudia opened the door to her apartment as Sofie hung up her cell. Tears spilled from beneath the thick frames of Sofie’s glasses.

“I thought he liked me. I must be a fool.”

“You are not a fool. Who is ‘he’ anyhow? Is this what you were upset about before I left?”

“A guy I’ve been seeing. A professor. He claims he’s feeling guilty about dating a student.”

“Did you remind him you’re about to graduate?”

“It was an excuse to dump me. I’m not a complete fool.”

“I knew you were seeing someone, and he’d obviously upset you last week, but it was clear you didn’t want to share the details.”

“I didn’t want you harping on me about how it’s unethical for a professor to date his students. Or how immoral it is for me to spend nights at his place.”

“I wouldn’t have done that.”

“You would’ve. Ever since Stella’s kidnapping when you ‘found religion’ you’re an entirely different person. You’re constantly lecturing me.”

“Am not.”

“Are too. He didn’t belong with me at any rate. He could have any girl he wanted. He should be dating a girl that looks like you, not me.”

“Why must you put yourself down?”

“You’re the one who’s always suggesting I change my wardrobe, cut my hair, or put on makeup.”

“That doesn’t mean I don’t think you’re pretty. It means I think you could be even prettier if you let yourself.”

“Well, apparently I’m not pretty enough for Johan. I’m going to get ready for class. If I have to face him, I’m at least going to look my best.”

“Now that’s the right attitude.”

Claudia tried to figure out which professor had the first name Johan. Maybe she could look it up on the university website. She was sure Sofie wasn’t ready to spill it. Most likely, she didn’t even realize she’d let the name slip.
