HACK 101 TURN OFF YOUR TV
The connection between TV and your immune system may not be immediately obvious, but for many reasons, cutting down your viewing hours can provide benefits to your immunity.
The first problem with TV is that it distracts you from other, healthier activities. TV shows can be addictive and encourage poor sleep habits and a sedentary lifestyle. TV keeps you indoors and away from the beneficial effects of sunlight, fresh air, and nature. It discourages you from socializing with friends and family who nourish your immune system. Prolonged TV viewing is also linked to antisocial behavior in children, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity, all of which weaken immunity.
The second major problem with TV is its detrimental psychological and emotional effects. News channels constantly stream messages of negativity, giving you endless reasons to feel fearful, depressed, and isolated. TV shows and movies reinforce unrealistic ideals and values about things like romance, success, and money that promote feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. They typically glorify money, sex, power, and materialism as the path to happiness. TV commercials also reinforce these messages and bombard you with marketing messages that attempt to push you into buying things that you donât need. The accumulated effect of all these messages is a mindset that fosters feelings of fear, anxiety, depression, anger, loneliness, and hateâall immunosuppressive emotions.
This isnât to say that all TV is bad, but to truly enjoy the health and happiness that you desire, you must be selective about what and how much you watch. Are the shows and movies youâre watching supporting the development of a healthy, positive mind and body, or are they taking that away? Are the core messages behind what you watch consistent with how you wish to think, feel, and experience life? If not, you may want to rethink your viewing habits.
