Chemical Characteristics

Cathinone is chemically known as S(-)-alphaaminopropiophenone, and is indistinguishable from amphetamine in its effects on the central nervous system. Experiments with drug-conditioned animals show that they cannot tell the difference between cathinone and amphetamine. Cathinone operates through the same mechanism as amphetamine, by causing a release of dopamine and other neurotransmitters from the pre-synaptic storage sites.5

Methcathinone is much like methamphetamine, giving a feeling of limitless energy, alertness and speeding of the mind, a sense of invincibility, and a euphoric high with reports of increased sexuality, creativity, and garrulousness. Some less pleasant effects include anxiety, tremor, insomnia, weight loss, dehydration, sweating, stomach pains, pounding heart, nosebleeds, and body aches. Toxic levels may produce convulsions, paranoia, and hallucinations. Like other central nervous system stimulants, methcathinone binges are usually followed by a “crash” with fatigue and depression. 6
